History of Algoma, Mississippi
Algoma is a small town in Mississippi located in Tishomingo County. Named after an Indian chief of the Chickasaw Nation, Algoma has a rich and interesting history dating back hundreds of years.
The area that is now Algoma was originally inhabited by the Chickasaw Indians, who were later forced to move to Oklahoma during the Trail of Tears in 1831. The first settlers arrived shortly after, bringing their families and establishing farms in the region. The settlement was first known as “Alger” before it was changed to Algoma in 1872.
In 1895, a post office was established in Algoma and it marked the beginning of growth for the town. A one-room schoolhouse was built shortly thereafter, followed by several churches and stores. The town also had its own newspaper, which began publication in 1897 and ran until 1920 when it ceased operations due to lack of interest from local residents.
In 1921, Algoma officially incorporated as a town with a mayor-council government system. During this time period, several new businesses opened up including a cotton gin, gristmill, sawmill and blacksmith shop. In addition to these businesses, there were also two train depots located within town limits that allowed for easy transportation for goods and people alike.
By 1940, Algoma had grown considerably from its humble beginnings with a population of over 500 people and numerous stores lining its main street including grocery stores, pharmacies and restaurants amongst others. Unfortunately World War II put a halt on much of this progress as many young men from the area were sent overseas to fight in battle.
After World War II ended however Algoma began to grow again with more businesses opening up along Main Street including an opera house which hosted various events such as live music performances and movie screenings throughout the 1950s and 1960s. During this time period there were also several public institutions established including an elementary school (1954) and public library (1959).
Today, Algoma is still growing although much slower than before due to its small size; however it still retains much of its old-time charm with many buildings from earlier decades still standing today including some churches that predate even before incorporation took place in 1921! Despite being small in size compared to other towns within Mississippi state lines; Algoma has managed to remain an important part of Tishomingo County’s history for over 100 years now.
